The name Inkilltambo comes from Quechua, meaning "Flowery Rest Stop" or "Garden Tambo". Built during the reign of Inca Emperor Wiracocha and expanded by Pachacutec, the site originally functioned as an important tambo (administrative relay station and rest stop) for chasquis (Inca messengers) traveling along the Antisuyo road toward the eastern jungle.
The trail leads down into a quiet canyon filled with native Polylepis trees, eucalyptus groves, and bubbling streams. The restored complex features multi-tiered agricultural terraces, carved limestone shrines, rectangular stone enclosures, and intricate water channels.
